Unsolved Case #14
Reference Number 00-7

Kristie Lynn Gunderson Lee was found dead in her apartment on Mach 31, 1994. She lived in an apartment in Pompano Beach, Florida, with her husband Jeff and her young son, Zachary. She was a hair stylist. She was 20 years old. Both Kristie and Jeff had lived in Austin, Texas before moving to Florida.

Jeff's mother and step-father, Kay and Joe Petralia, also lived in Pompano Beach. They had a key to Jeff and Kristie's apartment, and looked after Zachary while Kristie worked. It was Kay who made the 911 call on March 31, 1994. The Petralia's account was simple. They had arrived at 8:30 am, left with Zachary at 9:30, then returned at 10:30 to find Kristie dead. She had been struck on the head, then choked to death. The hand marks were still visible on her neck. Authorities suspected that Kristie's murder was a crime of passion. Naturally, Jeff was the prime suspect, but that quickly changed. Co-workers and computer records proved he had been at work since 8:00 am that morning until police contacted him about Kristie's death. Investigators returned to the crime scene, hoping to develop a new angle. Their next theory was that Kristie had possibly interrupted a burglary in progress. But the burglary theory also ran aground on the facts. Not one thing had been stolen from Kristie and Jeff's apartment.

Investigators best clue was the probable time of the murder, provided by the Lee's next-door neighbors. They claimed to have heard blood-curdling screams coming from the apartment at 9:00 am on the morning of Kristie's murder. The neighbors were positive of the time. According to the police, the Petralias said they were at the apartment at that time, and had reported no problems. However, the Petralia name came up again, when investigators talked to Kristie's best friend at work. She reportedly told police that Kristie and her mother-in-law had an acrimonious relationship. Since then, authorities have questioned the Petralias further. At this time, no charges have been filed in this case.
