On November 18, 1997, 19-year old James L. Smith, IV and a co-worker John P. Mattmiller were murdered in a robbery at their place of work, Woodson Music/ Friendly Pawn, Havelock, NC. The murders happened about 8:00pm, right about closing time. Person/persons unknown entered the store, overpowered them, bound and gagged them, and then proceeded to beat them to death with golf clubs. The store was robbed and main items missing were handguns and jewelry. Also missing was the tape from the surveillance camera. The locked video tape box was broken into and the tape was removed.

The bodies were discovered about 1:30 am by one of the Havelock Police patrol units making their nightly rounds. The front door was locked but the back door was open.

We desperately need your help. A double homicide is extremely unusual in a small town like Havelock. While we have received a great deal of support from the public and hundreds of leads have been called in, we are requesting your continued assistance. A criminal investigation is similar to working a puzzle; all the pieces are needed to accurately complete the picture. Many of the pieces are now in the possession of the task force. However, we have reason to believe that there are individuals who have information of value to this investigation that for unknown reasons have not yet come forward. We are making an appeal to those persons now. You may have the missing piece to the puzzle. Even if you think your information is unimportant or that it has already been reported, please call:

• Havelock Police Department             (252) 447-3212
• North Carolina SBI                           (910) 346-2121
