Unsolved Case #32
Reference Number 01-06
Murdered February 20, 2000
(Dennis Gruszewski) was brutally murdered in his home on 2/20/00. It is possible that he knew his murderer since there were no signs of a forced entry. The murder is suspected to have taken place around 1-3 AM early Sunday, 2/20 morning. His home address where he lived was 5302 Filo Avenue in Cleveland, Ohio (Slavic Village). He was a well known and well liked person in the neighborhood. I'm not sure what clothes he was wearing, but he did always wear a cowboy hat and was known as "Turtle" or "Turtleman". He was about 5'6" tall, brown hair, very thin and bow legged. He probably was wearing jeans and possibly work boots. He was a local ironworker (Local 17-"Lean Mean Local 17").
It is suspected that an acquaintance was with him Saturday, 2/19 and that he did not (according to the police) go into any of the local bars that day that he normally attends. He was last seen in a dark blue truck with a man, but no one has been able to tell us who it was or give a description because no one thought that this would ever happen. It is possible that it was a neighbor since there was rental property right next door and was known to have drug deals and convicts frequent the area.
He was murdered with an axe. I'm not quite sure the exact details other than there was severe head and body trauma caused by the axe (hatchet). This crime has been on the local news several times shortly after the murder to bring awareness to the crime and a story was done twice in a six month period on "crimer stoppers".
There is a $10,000 reward being offered for any information that leads to the indictment of this killer.
